Winter Basketball League

League is for third through sixth grade inner-city boys and girls. The teams play against each other for six games, have one tournament game and then the season ends with an awards banquet to which family and friends are invited. All games and practices are at the Marguerite Robinson Community Center, 6th and Patterson, Newport KY Volunteer coaches practice on Wednesday evenings and encourage kids in sportsmanship, team building and serve as positive role models during the Saturday games. Volunteer referees are needed to keep play fair and positive. Referees can choose how many games they want to ref. Volunteer score and time keepers are needed to keep the games moving. They can choose to work one game or all 7.

Volunteers are being sought to act as IRS and Kentucky income tax preparers under the AARP TaxAide Program. This free tax service is offered to residents of Northern Kentucky during the February-April, 2009 tax season. The AARP provides training for volunteer tax preparers. We use tax software prepared by the Internal Revenue Service and the Kentucky Department of Revenue. Computers are provided at the eight AARP TaxAide sites in the Northern Kentucky district. Short initial training sessions in small groups will be offered in October for new volunteers. A longer training session will be given to all AARP TaxAide volunteers in January, 2009. Foster Homes

We receive an endless number of requests for intake & are extremely limited on the space & resources to handle them all. KY Tails provides all medical care for these animals, including testing for FIV/FELV, vaccinations, etc. before being placed into a foster home.

Special Events at the Museum are typically scheduled a year in advance, so please refer to the Events Calendar on the website, if you are interested in volunteering for a specific event. We do ask that any individual or group interested in volunteering for an event please contact the Museum or the City of Fort Wright, Kentucky at least two weeks prior to the event. Children, school groups or other youth organizations are welcome to volunteer for scheduled events, however children must be at least 10 years of age and accompanied by a chaperone or parent. In addition, Youth Volunteers will have to provide a signed release form from a parent or guardian prior to volunteering. Volunteers for special events will also be required to sign a release form and provide contact information prior to the event. Special Event Volunteers will be required to wear an I.D. badge and may be required to wear a specific uniform for an event. During some special events, such as Battery Hooper Days, Volunteers may be required to follow a specific schedule.

The original trucks for these cars were scrapped some 50 years ago, but we have two pairs of trucks that can become the starting point for facsimile trucks. Our streetcar coordinator/historian will work with this volunteer to create a design that looks like the original archbar trucks. Take on the challenge – put the finishing touch on this historic car!

Throughout the year, Cincinnati Museum Center hosts exhibits that travel to different venues around the country (and around the world). Museum Center also has annual special events in which volunteers play an integral part. Snowball Family Gala is a favorite festivity for families, and the Passport to the World CultureFests allow guests to experience the music, art, crafts and food of cultures from around the world. Erlanger Branch Children’s Department – “Reading Buddies” Program Volunteer

This program takes place at the Erlanger branch, located on 401 Kenton Lands Road, Erlanger KY, 41018. Volunteers will attend meetings of the Reading Buddies Program in order to spend time reading aloud to a child or children who are non-native English speakers. Volunteers will socialize with the children and their families during the program. Volunteers are asked to assist with a simple set up and clean up of the program space as needed. (not required) The schedule for this position will depend upon the timing of the Reading Buddies Programs. The programs will be scheduled once per month, with dates and times TBA. Each volunteer will be expected to participate in a minimum of 3 Reading Buddies Programs per calendar year. The duration of time required for each individual Reading Buddies Program will vary, from a minimum of 1 hour to a maximum of 3 hours. The programs have been scheduled on Saturdays, but that is subject to change, based on community need.

Volunteers Responding to an acute need for volunteers to visit in the jails, the Northern Kentucky Interfaith Commission and Mental Health America joined forces to sponsor Exodus. Exodus volunteers listen to incarcerated people who are often filled with anxiety, frustration, and depression because of their past and present life situation. Pairs of Exodus volunteers visit with the inmate in a holding cell, away from the inmate's usual cell. They visit inmates in the three Northern Kentucky county jails (Kenton, Campbell, and Boone). Christmas Day Dinner

21st Annual Christmas Day Dinner Serves 1120 In 1987 Mental Health America of Northern Kentucky realized the need for some members of the community to be able to enjoy a traditional Christmas celebration, complete with a big meal and presents. A community partnership was developed with businesses and volunteers which have grown into a truly remarkable experience, not only for the guest, but the 405 volunteers. The first Christmas Day Celebration served 35 guests. This year we served 1120 people with over half being children. In addition to Christmas dinner, there were clothes, blankets, toiletries, toys for the children, pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and live music. Thanks to all the businesses and volunteers who helped make this event a huge success in Bringing Wellness Home!

Through the Neighborhood Watch Program neighbors band together because they understand that the active participation of residents is a critical element in community safety. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Receive training designed to help you protect yourself, your family and your neighborhood in disaster situations. Learn basic disaster response skills including: utility management, small fire suppression, medical assistance, searching for victims and team organization. Those who complete the training are assigned to a team that may be activated to assist with disaster response.

Youth Mentor
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cincinnati, Cincinnati.  Call 513-421-4120.
Mentor a N. Ky youth who can use a positive adult role model. Volunteers usually meet 3-4 times a month to take a child out for recreational, educational, or social activities. We provide one group activity a month and free tickets when available. Professional support offered.

One to One Literacy Mentoring

One to One: Practicing Reading with Students provides all members of a community-employers, parents, faith-based, and involved citizens an opportunity to play an integral role in helping struggling readers with the support they need to be successful in reading. One to One gives schools a committed trained cadre of volunteers dedicated to helping students achieve. One to One Coaches meet once a week, one-to-one with a kindergarten through third grade student who is struggling in reading. One to One will be offered in three Kenton County elementary schools this spring. One to One provides training and materials to business and community volunteers who want to make serious, meaningful connections with schools.
