Learning about the world of work starts early in Johnson Elementary School's kindergarten classes. Students were encouraged to identify what abilities they have that are already valuable in their community. The class started their "Chores for Change" campaign to raise money to send care packages to relatives and friends serving in the armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each child identifed jobs they could perform asking the recipient of their services to pay them what their work was worth. From a cent to a couple dollars, the students earned money to purchase basic hygiene items and nonperishable treats for the service members to share. Mail carrier Patrick Barth, of the the Ft. Thomas Post Offfice, visited the classes on Thursday March 4th to collect the boxes. He helped the students imagine how their packages would travel from their classroom to their uncle, son, or friend serving overseas. Students helped load the mail truck and send their 12 boxes, valued at $360.00 to grateful women and men far from home. |
